2022 Nissan Frontier Full Review: Specs, Prices & Features

Finally, after more than a decade and a half of waits, Nissan has shown off the third-generation Frontier for the 2022 model year. It still has a frame from the early 2000s, but the suspension has been changed, and the rest of the truck has been a lot better.

Unlike other modern midsize pickup trucks, this one isn’t in style yet. But its bold bodywork and popular technology could make it the new hot thing. The new Frontier no longer looks like a throwback to the past with a futuristic face and blistered fenders based on the original Nissan “Hardbody” compact trucks. Its predecessor, which was mainly unchanged for 16 years, looked very similar. Another example is that the interior goes from drab to pretty damn lovely, thanks to a more stylish layout and extra features. Hence, this is also true for the new generation. Power comes from a 310-hp V-6 that works with a nine-speed automatic transmission and rear- or four-wheel drive. They’ll also like the Pro-4X trim with a firmer suspension and an electronic locking rear differential. It also comes with other harsh extras, like skid plates.

How Much and Which One to Buy

If you want to get the best value for your money, we think the SV model is the best choice. It would be best to start with the crew cab, which is the bigger of the two cab sizes. It would also have a four-wheel drive. Our truck would come with the Convenience and Technology packages. Still, we’d also add the 8.0-inch touchscreen and the six-way power-adjustable driver seat. Toggle them all together, and you get adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automated emergency braking, and heated front seats and steering wheel. You also get a trailer hitch, lights in the cargo bed, a spray-in bed liner, and a trailer hitch. Putting this together adds $4600 to the bottom line.

The engine, transmission, and performance of the Nissan Frontier 2022

2022 nissan frontier

The 2020 Frontier had Nissan’s new naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V-6. The 2022 Frontier will have the same engine. There is a 310 horsepower engine that makes 281 pound-feet of torque, too. It works with a nine-speed automatic transmission and can be used with either rear- or four-wheel drive. When we took the Frontier for a spin, we found its V-6 engine enough to get us going and be very smooth. Even though it’s not as powerful as the lifted Chevy Colorado ZR2 or the Jeep Gladiator, the Pro-4X model is ready and willing to go off-road. We also liked the Nissan’s new quick and direct steering and a lot of other chassis improvements that have made the truck feel more stable and refined while it’s on the move.

Towing and load-carrying capacity

As with the previous generation, it can only pull 6720 pounds, which isn’t enough to tow cars like the Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Jeep Gladiator, which can remove at least 7650 pounds. The Nissan’s maximum payload does go up by 160 pounds from 1450 pounds to 1610 pounds, but that’s not a lot.

Connectivity and Infotainment

It is how the new Frontier’s infotainment system works. You can get an 8.0-inch or a 9.0-inch touchscreen with the car. Below the screen, a pair of physical knobs can be used to change the stereo’s volume and tuning. Connectivity options like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and many charging ports with USB-C ports are the most desirable. A subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless smartphone charging can also be added to the Frontier, which can also be bought. To make the sound system even better, you can pay extra to get a nine-speaker Fender one.

Real-World MPG and Fuel Economy

The Fuel mileage is 18 mpg in the city, and 24 on the highway is for the Frontier with rear-wheel drive. That drops to 17 mpg in the city and 22 on the road when you drive with a four-wheel drive. As soon as we can drive the new Frontier on our 75-mph highway route, which is part of our long-term testing, we can figure out how it performs in real life. Cargo and comfort

On the other hand, the new Frontier has a new interior design and materials that look a lot better than the old and plastic-filled cabin that was so bad. So, Nissan made the car look better and have more soft-touch surfaces, but the company also came up with many cool new things. There is a new way to look at the dashboard. The analog gauges are now shown on an extra-large 7-inch color screen. A heated steering wheel and heated seats for the front seats are also on the list. As for seats, the Frontier’s Zero Gravity seats keep our backs happy. You can put things in a bin on top of the dashboard or put stuff under the back seat. You can choose between a short and long cargo bed for the truck. The shorter one is just under 5 feet long, while the longer one is more than 6 feet long.

2022 Nissan Frontier interior

2022 nissan frontier interior

Nissan’s reworked 2020 Frontier gets some much-needed upgrades to the inside, making it a class leader. It’s sleek, well-designed, and silent. Much hard plastic remains, but you’ll find it everywhere in a bit of pickup.

Even on lengthy trips, the front chairs remain supportive and comfy. It’s a little tight in the back, but adults can fit in the Crew Cab versions on short rides without feeling cramped (they’ll want to avoid the King Cab’s rear seats, however). A user-friendly infotainment system is included as standard equipment in this Nissan.

The Frontier can accommodate four passengers in King Cab variants, while Crew Cab vehicles can accommodate five people. Standard on all cars is cloth upholstery. There are various interior options, including leather, synthetic leather, power-adjustable seats, heated seats, and a heated steering wheel.

The Frontier’s front-seat passengers are in for a treat. Zero Gravity chairs are among the most comfortable in their class and provide plenty of space for the passengers. Drivers get a clear view of the road ahead because of their elevated position.

The backseats aren’t as roomy as the front ones. On the other hand, adults will find the King Cab vehicles somewhat tight. Adults can sit in the rear of the Crew Cab without much difficulty, but they won’t be able to spread out much. Even with Crew Cab body types, most other small trucks have tiny back seats. Thus, this isn’t unheard of.

There are two complete sets of LATCH connections in the rear seats to install child safety seats. A tether anchor for the back middle seat is also included in Crew Cab vehicles.

2022 Nissan Frontier Exterior

In addition to the many internal and external changes, the 2022 Nissan Frontier’s exterior design gets the most attention. In designing the Frontier’s third generation, Nissan created a contemporary and genuine vehicle. Designers drew inspiration from the famous Nissan Hardbody, an off-road racer popular in the 1980s and 1990s, to celebrate the brand’s lengthy truck legacy.

A powerful and imposing front and hood, accented by new precise interlocking headlights, greet drivers as they approach the 2022 Frontier. The Frontier’s broad, high posture is reinforced by massive vertical fenders and high shoulder bodysides, which give it a confident air. Structured lights that seem to be fastened to the body sides and an overall athletic design that incorporates solid rear fenders and the rear bumper complete the powerful aspect in the back.

Glacier White, Boulder Gray Pearl, Gun Metallic, Super Black, Baja Storm, Tactical Green Metallic, Deep Blue Pearl, Red Alert, and Cardinal Red Metallic TriCoat are among the 2022 Nissan Frontier exterior colors available.
